Mangala asks why JVP didn’t protest when Chinese delegation arrived

Former Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera has asked why the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) did not protest when a high-level Chinese delegation visited Sri Lanka.

The JVP staged a protest outside the US Embassy in Colombo today against the visit by US Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo.

However, the JVP did not protest when a high-powered Chinese delegation led by former Chinese Foreign Minister and the current Communist Party Political Bureau Member Yang Jiechi, arrived in Colombo earlier this month.

“We could have respected JVP concerns about our sovereignty as genuine had they also protested opposite the Chinese embassy few weeks ago,” Samaraweera tweeted.

During its protest in Colombo today the JVP said the party strongly condemns the efforts by the United States Government to interfere with the independence and sovereignty of Sri Lanka.

US Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo arrived in Sri Lanka this evening on an invitation extended by his Sri Lankan counterpart, Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardena. (Colombo Gazette)
