Sri Lanka seeks support to defeat LTTE’s international network

Sri Lanka has sought support to defeat the LTTE’s international network which continues to push its ideology.

Speaking at the United Nations today via video conferencing, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said that having experienced separatism and terrorism for near three decades, Sri Lanka condemns all terrorist acts in the strongest possible terms, be it domestic or international.

He said that in spite of its elimination from the Sri Lankan soil, the international network of this terrorist outfit remains, pushing its ruthless ideology and influencing certain Capitals to spread its baseless lies and propaganda.

“We are hopeful that no State will tolerate activities of this international network which continues to espouse and propagate violent ideology under different guises and manifestations,” he said.

The President said that the global community must stand in solidarity with Sri Lanka, notwithstanding narrow domestic political compulsions, to counter terrorism. This ideology that introduced suicide bombings to the world has set precedents for acts of violent extremism across the world. This is evident by the growing recruitment drive of the extremist outfits.

“It is the hope of my people that the world community will not seek to forget or rewrite the violent past of this terrorist organization and allow the propagation of the group’s propaganda, which aimed at indoctrination and radicalization of another generation of youth,” he said.

The President said that as a nation that has witnessed the bitterness of war, Sri Lanka is committed to promoting peace across the world and remains fully committed to UN Peacekeeping.

He also said that the UN system needs to ensure equity, inclusivity and transparency, while being more responsive to the ever-changing global environment.

In order to ensure the sustainability and the credibility of the Organization, Rajapaksa said that political witch hunts through questionable motives against Member States, need to be halted.

The President also said that Sri Lanka is committed to follow a neutral foreign policy with no affiliations to any particular country or power bloc.

“As a strategically placed country in the Indian Ocean, it is our priority to ensure that the Indian Ocean is maintained as a zone of peace where no country could gain advantage over any other. Moreover, Indian Ocean has many international sea lanes that are economically important to a large number of nations and therefore, should remain accessible to global trade and commerce,’ he said.

The President said that powerful countries and nations should provide their support and assistance to maintain the neutrality of the Indian Ocean and to protect its valuable marine resources. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. Does Gotabaya remember the UNHRC and international condemnation of him pardoning sadistic serial killer, former Staff Sergeant Sunil Ratnayake, who was on death row for killing eight Tamil civilians, including a five-year-old girl and two teenagers, in 2000 during the civil war?
Sunil Ratnayake, was sentenced in 2015 for blindfolding eight Tamil civilians, slitting their throats and dumping their bodies into a sewer in 2000.
One of Gotabaya’s top priorities upon becoming the president of SL was to release this racist serial killer amidst the chaos of a pandemic in March 2020 and just in time for the general elections.
Gotabaya continues to try hoodwinking the international community.

  2. It is the hope of the Tamil people that the world community will not forget or let the Sri Lankan state rewrite its violent past of state run-terror and unspeakable crimes of the state’s armed forces, and allow the propagation of the state’s propaganda aimed to rid itself of accountability and grant the racist perpetrators ruling the state with impunity.

    • The Sinhalease leaders didn’t eliminate talented Tamil leaders, but the LTTE did. Tamils can’t become successful by eliminating their own talented leaders. The people of Northern Province can vote freely, because the world came together and eliminated the ruthless terrorism. More than twenty countries came together to eliminate the LTTE, including the US and India. However, few countries are pointing finger at the Rajapaksas to create division in Sri Lanka to achieve their ulterior motives. The Sri Lankan government didn’t create or support the LTTE, but the other countries did. Those countries who created and supported the LTTE are shedding crocodile tears and Tamils continue believe them.

  3. Internally, the Sri Lankan government is not doing enough to enlighten local Tamil people. That is why the external forces are influencing local Tamil people easily. Even the SLPP government dances according to the foreign powers to undermine Sri Lankan born talents who expose the foreign powers’ double standards. The Sri Lankan government wants to have its cake and eat it too.

  4. War criminal responsible for the death of thousands of civilians and who is refusing any meaningful mechanism of accountability to protect himself and the SLAFs is asking the UN to help squash a proscribed organization for its crimes. Gosh, what the UN member states must think of this character. They ain’t no fools.

    • Who put those civilians in the “line of fire” ? Even Solheim recently confirmed that Prabhakaran refused to let his “human-shield” leave, and the LTTE opened fire on Tamil civilians trying to flee.

Your crocodile tears impress no one.
