Swiss Embassy employee released on bail

A Swiss Embassy employee who was arrested and remanded after she claimed she was kidnapped and released, was granted bail today. The employee was arrested on 16 December on the grounds of falsifying evidence. The local employee was produced before a Magistrate and remanded till today. The Criminal Investigations Department had been instructed to name and arrest the Swiss embassy employee and produce her before courts for falsifying evidence.

Justice Minister backs death penalty for drug smugglers

Justice Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva has backed a proposal to implement the death penalty for drug smugglers. Speaking at the Justice Ministry today, Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said that there are other countries which implement the death penalty for similar offences. He questioned why Sri Lanka could not implement the death penalty when countries like the US, Australia and Singapore did. Four Air Force personnel killed in Warakapola accident

Four Air Force personnel were killed in an accident in Warakapola today, the Police said. The Police said that the three-wheeler they were travelling in collided with a truck along the Kandy-Colombo main road early this morning. The Air Force personnel had been returning from a funeral when the accident occurred. The driver of the container was arrested. (Colombo Gazette)
