A 35-year-old Ukrainian was arrested by the Tourism Police on suspicion of operating a drone in a high-security zone in Kandy early this morning.
Police investigations have revealed that the man who had stayed at a hotel in a higher elevation opposite the Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy had operated the drone capturing images of the Temple, the President’s house, and other important locations last night.
The suspect was arrested while behaving in a suspicious manner close to the temple and the President’s house and was later handed over to the Tourism Police for further investigations.
The suspect had revealed that he had lost control of the drone and had arrived near the President’s house to search for the machine.
Police inspection of the suspect’s hotel room had revealed a high-tech drone, which is synchronized in a manner which allows it to return to the location it took flight from, in the event the handler loses control of the machine.
The Police had also seized a laptop that the suspect had used to store images taken by the drone.
Investigations have revealed that the suspect was not in possession of a passport or valid visa and had informed Police that he had left it back with a friend in Weligama, Matara.
The Police said the suspect had arrived in Sri Lanka in the latter part of last year.
The Police have obtained the assistance of the Criminal Investigations Department and the Sri Lanka Airforce to investigate the motives of the suspect to shoot images during the Perehera held by the Temple of the Tooth Relic, while he is to be produced before the court. (Colombo Gazette)
