United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe today warned that the coronavirus (COVID-19) second wave is inevitable.
Speaking at an election rally in Polonnaruwa today, Wickremesinghe said that no country can escape from the second wave.
He said that the second wave will hit Sri Lanka either before or after the August Parliamentary election.
Wickremesinghe said that Sri Lanka’s failure to increase PCR testing has paved the way for the second wave.
The former Prime Minister said that while countries like Nepal have conducted over 600,000 tests Sri Lanka has conducted only just over 120,000 tests.
He said that the coronavirus has had a major impact on the Sri Lankan economy.
Wickremesinghe said that 500,000 people have lost jobs as a result of the collapse of the economy.
He said that the number is expected to double by the end of this year. (Colombo Gazette)
