Namal questions timing to construct new cricket stadium

Former Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa has questioned the timing of the decision to construct a new cricket stadium in Homagama.

Rajapaksa tweeted saying while infrastructure development is vital for any sport, this should not have been a priority at a time like this.

“The authorities must always involve all stakeholders and get their opinion before taking the final decision,” Rajapaksa, son of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa tweeted.

Earlier, former Sri Lanka Cricket Captain Mahela Jayawardene had once again hit out at the Sri Lanka Cricket Board’s (SLC) proposal to construct a cricket stadium in Homagama.

Jayawardene pointed out that Sri Lanka has hosted a T-20 World Cup and co-hosted a 50 over World Cup with existing venues.

He had said that a stadium is not built for USD 40 million hoping to secure a World Cup in 10-15 years.

Jayawardene further said that the country first bids for the World Cup and if selected, then with the financial assistance from the International Cricket Council (ICC), constructs infrastructure.

Namal Rajapaksa said that Mahela Jayawardene  has a valid point and should be given serious thought.

Yesterday, the Sri Lanka Cricket Board defended the decision to go ahead with the project saying that for a considerable period of time, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has been on the watch and was exploring possibilities in acquiring a suitable land closer to Colombo to build a fully-fledged international cricket stadium with a view of accommodating 40,000 spectators, as the need has arisen with the popularity of the game of cricket and to best suit the demands of World Cricket. 1. Namal the immature political pup attempting to be heard from the wilderness to show his importance.
Mahela has dealt with it and Namal’s input at this late stage is not necessary.
NAMAL get back to political wilderness or to your family. You are still immature. Learn the trade and focus closer to your home for the next decade or two.
YOU open your mouth, the party will loose votes and bring your father and uncle to disrepute.
