Depression developing over Bay of Bengal to affect Sri Lanka

A depression developing over the Bay of Bengal is to affect Sri Lanka over the next few days.

The Department of Meteorology said that a low pressure area over the south east of the Bay of Bengal is likely to developed into a depression over same region during next 12 hours and further intensify into a cyclonic storm over south in the Bay of Bengal tomorrow (16th).

The Department of Meteorology said that it is very likely to move northwestwards initially till the 17th and then re-curve north-northeastwards towards the North of the Bay of Bengal between the 18th to the 20th of May.

Under the influence of the system, heavy showers or thundershowers and
a sudden roughness associated with the sudden increase of wind speeds of up to 60-70 kmph will be experienced in the shallow and deep see areas around the island during the next 24 hours.

Heavy falls about 150 mm can be expected at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa,
Southern and Central provinces. The wind speed can be increased up to 40 -50kmph over the island. (Colombo Gazette)
