Five-judge bench to hear case on polls date

A? 5 – judge bench was appointed by the Supreme Court today to hear the Fundamental Rights (FR) petitions filed challenging the date announced for the General Elections 2020.
The 5- judge bench is to be chaired by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya.
On Monday (11), Attorney General Dappula de Livera informed the Supreme Court that he is not in a position to appear for the Election Commission and its members in the case challenging the date of the Parliamentary election this year.
The Election Commission had declared 20 June to hold the Parliamentary election which was earlier scheduled for 25 April.
However, the date has been challenged by a number of people in the Supreme Court.
The petitioners have noted that the environment is not conducive to hold the election as the coronavirus pandemic is still not under control.
The Supreme Court has decided to support the petitions on 18 May. (Colombo Gazette)
