Champika and Welgama file petitions against polls

09 May, 2020

Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) leader Patali Champika Ranawaka and former Parliamentarian Kumara Welgama filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the gazette notification issued by the Election Commission to hold Parliamentary elections on 20 June.

The Election Commission and Attorney General have been cited as the respondents.

The petitioners are of the view that the conditions are not conducive to hold an election in June as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Similar petitions have been filed by others as well in this regard. (Colombo Gazette)
