Over 200 prisoners released for Vesak

The Department of Prisons has released 228 prisoners coinciding with the national Vesak festival, which is commemorated today.

An official from the Department of Prisons told the Colombo Gazette that the prisoners were released from prisons across the island.

Prisoners who were imprisoned for minor offences were released in this manner, he said.

The official clarified that prisoners who are imprisoned under 32 serious offences, including drugs, and child and women abuse, were not included in the list of prisoners released for Vesak. (Colombo Gazette)

Sri Lankans among migrants rescued in Mediterranean

Sri Lankans were among migrants rescued in the Mediterranean sea. A four-day-old baby was one of over 480 migrants rescued by humanitarian ships on Saturday during search and rescue operations in the central Mediterranean Sea, Reuters reported.
