Cabinet approves proposal to erect statue of Nelson Mandela

Cabinet has approved a proposal to erect a statue of former South African President Nelson Mandela in Colombo.

The statue will be erected on land at the Colombo Municipal Library premises.

However, Sri Lankan Government provisions will not be used for this purpose.

The Government says attention was drawn to install statues and monuments to respect national heroes and those who deserve to be honored in a particular place instead of installing such statues and monuments at several places.

Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader, and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.

He was the country’s first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. (Colombo Gazette)

CID Director goes to Police to complain against lawyer

The Director of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Shani Abeysekera, has lodged a complaint with the Police saying a lawyer had made threats against him. In his complaint, Abeysekera said that the President of the Lawyers? Collective, Attorney at Law Manoj Gamage had made threats against him at a media conference. Just last week Abeysekera had appeared before the Parliament Select Committee on the Easter Sunday attacks to make a statement after he was summoned before the Committee.

Charges served against Ranjan Ramanayake

Charges have been served against State Minister Ranjan Ramanayake at the Supreme Court over contempt of court. Ramanayake was accused of contempt of court for allegedly making a controversial statement regarding the composition of the Supreme Court judge bench hearing the petitions filed against the President?s dissolution of Parliament last year. The court postponed the case to December 2nd.
