Probe launched into prison break attempt

The Prisons Intelligence Unit, together with the Ragama Police, has commenced investigations into the prison break attempt at the Mahara Prison early this morning.

The Police said 7 inmates had attempted to escape from the Mahara prison by climbing on to a wall using rope and bed sheets between 2.30 a.m. to 3.00 a.m. today.

Prison officials had opened fire to foil the attempt, preventing a majority of the inmates from escaping.

However, a 38 year old prisoner had fallen off the wall and had succumbed to injuries while being transferred to the Ragama Hospital.

Meanwhile, two prison officials who were injured while trying to capture the prisoners have also been admitted to the Ragama Police.

The Wattala Magistrate is set to conduct a magisterial inquiry into the death of the prisoner today. (Colombo Gazette)
