Highest number of PCR testing carried out

The Ministry of Health says the highest number of PCR or COVID-19 testing for a day was conducted yesterday.

Director General of Health Services Dr. Anil Jasinghe said 1400 PCR tests were conducted islandwide.

The Batticaloa Teaching Hospital, which has a capacity of conducting 1000 PCR tests, conducted a number of tests for the first time yesterday, he said.

Dr. Jasinghe said that the Ministry of Health is looking at involving state universities such as Colombo, Kelaniya and Peradeniya, to conduct PCR or COVID-19 testing.

PCR machines are available at almost all state universities, and the Ministry of Health is considering utilizing the machines to increase the testing capacity in Sri Lanka, he added. (Colombo Gazette)

Maldivian arrested attempting to smuggle money

A Maldivian national was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport this morning when he attempted to smuggle foreign currency out of the country. The 26 year old man was arrested at the airport departure lounge with USD 25,000 valued at over Rs. 3.5 million.
