Constitutional Council considers letter from EC

The Constitutional Council (CC) which met today, considered a letter sent by the Chairman of the Election Commission, Mahinda Deshapriya with regards to transfers approved by the Police Commission during the election period.

At the meeting, the CC decided to submit to the attention of the Police Commission that it should work with the concurrence of the Election Commission with regards to transfers and appointments of police officers during the election period, the Parliament office said.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Constitutional Council and former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya stated at the CC meeting that he had no intention of reconvening Parliament to create another crisis and urged all parties to not create any form of Constitutional crisis at this pandemic situation.

The Parliament office said that Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa had, meanwhile, informed the Constitutional Council that steps are being taken to look into the problems of Sri Lankan labourers in the Middle East in the face of the coronavirus and that steps are being taken to resolve their problems. 

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, former Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa and other ex- officio members of the Constitutional Council attended the meeting today. (Colombo Gazette)
