Parliamentary election to be held on 20 June

The National Election Commission has decided to hold the Parliamentary election on 20 June.

The election was earlier scheduled to be held on 25th April 2020 but was postponed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

A gazette notice signed by the three members of the National Election Commission announcing the new date of the election has been issued.

The gazette notice states that with reference to the Notice No. 2167/19 dated 21.03.2020 in terms of Section 24 (3) of the Parliamentary Elections Act, No. 01 of 1981, which stated that the Parliamentary Election for electing members of Parliament for the Electoral Districts set out in the Schedule hereto will not be held on 25th April 2020, it is hereby notified that the election for electing the members of Parliament for the aforesaid Electoral Districts will be held on 20th June 2020. The Sri Lankan public have been requested to wear face masks in crowded places as a precautionary measure following the threat of the coronavirus spreading from China to other countries. Health officials said that while steps have been taken to prevent the virus from entering Sri Lanka, the public must take some precautions.
