The first water birth has been reported at a Sri Lankan hospital.
Ninewells hospital in Colombo said that a couple gave birth to a child using the water birth process and that it was a success.
Nilantha Rathnayake, Director Marketing at Ninewells Hospital told the Colombo Gazette the hospital was proud to be the first to introduce a water birthing facility in Sri Lanka.
The Ninewells hospital boasts Sri Lanka’s first themed luxury maternity delivery suites.
Rennie Boreham, a midwife from England, who has been part of Ninewells Hospital since January 2020, assisted in the first water birth in Sri Lanka.
Boreham said that the hospital and its staff have been undergoing extensive training and gaining knowledge on conducting water births, and to also assure patients that it was a safe birthing method.
Water births mainly reduce maternal anxiety and the pharmacological use of drugs, while it also brings forth a deep satisfaction not only to the assisting nurses, but also to the patient giving birth, the midwife explained.
Boreham added that she was looking forward to encouraging and assisting more women to use the water birthing facility at the Ninewells Hospital in the future. (Colombo Gazette)
