The Samagi Jana Balawegaya today raised concerns on misinformation being spread through the media related to the coronavirus.
Former Parliamentarian Dr. Harsha de silva said that at a time when arrests are being made over fake news, there needs to be focus placed on misinformation as well.
“At this time the correct information must reach the public,” he said.
He noted that there were reports Sri Lanka had been “ranked 9th” in a report over its fight against the coronavirus but others had said that there was a threat in Sri Lanka.
Dr. Harsha de silva said that at a time like this the media and others have a responsibility to be mindful of information that is shared and report only the truth.
Sri Lanka had been reported to have been ranked 9th in the Global Response to Infectious Diseases for the country’s efforts to defeat the coronavirus.
However, it was revealed today that the information was misleading. (Colombo Gazette)
