The Ministry of Transport Management has decided to deploy over 5000 buses and trains for public transportation from Monday (20).
Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said that 5000 buses and 400 trains will be operated from 20 April.
In line with the Ministry’s decision, the Department of Railways said office trains will be operated from Monday (20), only for the use of employees of public and private institutions declared as essential services.
The Ministry of Transport Management yesterday decided to operate public transportation if private and public organizations falling under essential services, were reopened for complete operations after 20 April.
All private and public institutions, except for those declared as essential services by the Government, have been closed since the implementation of the islandwide- Police curfew since 24 March due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Public transportation was halted due to the pandemic, while public and private Institutions declared as essential services are only operating under 50% capacity.
Minister Amaraweera said in the event the institutions recommence complete operations public transportation will be provided for a period of two weeks.
Minister Amaraweera made these observations during a meeting held yesterday at the Ministry of Transport with the participation of officials from the Department of Railways, Sri Lanka Transport Board, National Transport Commission and the Motor Traffic Department. (Colombo Gazette)
