A Philippine national suspected of contracting the coronavirus (COVID-19) was brought ashore by the Sri Lanka Navy today.
The Navy said that the foreigner was onboard the container ship MSC Taranto, owned by a Liberian company.
MSC Lanka (Private) Limited, the local agent of the ship made a request from the National Operations Center for Prevention of COVID-19 to allow the patient to be admitted to a local hospital for treatment.
Accordingly, with the approval of the Ministry of Defence and direct guidance of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva, the Sri Lanka Navy made prompt action to bring ashore the 36-year-old Philippine national named Solis Ryan today.
The Navy’s Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Unit approached the container ship which was about 05 nautical miles off the Colombo harbour and brought the patient ashore by following the necessary guidelines declared by health experts.
The patient was disinfected on the harbour premises before he was taken to the Colombo National Hospital. (Colombo Gazette)
