The public have been requested to refrain from gathering to celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, which falls on Monday (13) and Tuesday (14).
Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) C.D. Wickremeratne has instructed the Police Department to take necessary measures to prevent the gathering of people for the festivities.
The Police Spokesman SP Jaliya Senaratne said that there were reports of various festivities being organized in certain areas in view of the New Year.
He said an islandwide Police curfew is in place to curtail the spread of the coronavirus, and conducting New Year festivities would defy the purpose of the curfew and guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health.
SP Senaratne said in order to keep social distancing in practice, the Acting IGP has instructed the Police Department to deploy more mobile patrol units to disperse people gathering to celebrate the New Year in violation of the curfew. (Colombo Gazette)
