Testing for virus at state universities

The Government has approved the use of thermal cyclers, or PCR machines at state universities for the testing of COVID-19 patients in Sri Lanka.

Co- Cabinet Spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardena said in his capacity as the Minister of Higher Education, a proposal in this regard was submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers yesterday.

Minister Gunawardena said 56 PCR machines are currently available at a number of state universities, including Colombo, Sri Jayawardenapura, Peradeniya, Ruhuna, Kelaniya and Sabaragamuwa.

On the instructions of Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi, the Sabaragamuwa University has commenced the use of its PCR machine to test patients for COVID-19 in Sri Lanka, he said.

Minister Bandula Gunawardena added that measures are underway to enable the commencing of testing at other state universities with PCR machines. (Colombo Gazette)
