Sri Lankans stranded in foreign airports to be brought back

The Government is taking measures to bring back 33 Sri Lankans stranded in International Airports due to the global outbreak of the Coronavirus.

Co- Cabinet Spokesman Ramesh Pathirana said students and other industry officials were among the stranded Sri Lankans.

The group consists of 5 Sri Lankans in Oman, 3 in Dubai, 7 in Singapore, 2 in Turkey, 1 each in Ethiopia, Malaysia, India, the Maldives and Portugal and 5 in Egypt.

He said the Sri Lankan passengers will undergo a 21- day quarantine period after landing in the country.

Minister Pathirana added that the stranded Sri Lankans are to be brought back based on a proposal submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers by Minister of Foreign Relations Dinesh Gunawardena.

Commenting on 4200 Sri Lankans in Iran, who had overstayed their visas, Minister Pathirana said the Ministry of Foreign Relations is currently compiling a list of Sri Lankans overseas who require assistance to return to Sri Lanka.

He said the Ministry will be in a position to issue a statement on the Sri Lankans in Iran by the end of this month. (Colombo Gazette)

Navy foils illegal migration attempt from Mannar
