Public urged to alert authorities on traders overcharging

The public have been urged to inform the Secretaries of their relevant Provincial Councils on retailers selling goods for unreasonable prices.

Co- Cabinet Spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardena said that there were reports of private retailers purchasing goods at economic centres and selling it at a higher price to consumers by way of delivery services.

A number of private retailers have been granted permission to carry out delivery of essential goods, during the islandwide Police curfew in effect due to the COVID-19 outbreak in Sri Lanka.

Minister Gunawardena urged consumers to file a complaint with the Secretaries of their relevant Provincial Councils if any retailers are found to be selling essential goods at a higher price.

An investigation will be carried out into the complaints, and measures will be taken to revoke the curfew passes issued to the said retailers, he added. (Colombo Gazette)
