The Government has introduced four systems under which curfew passes are to be issued in the future.
The President’s Media Division (PMD) said there were reports of crowds gathering at Police stations to obtain curfew passes for various purposes.
This defies the purpose of the islandwide Police curfew in effect, which is to implement social distancing to curb the spread of COVID- 19 in Sri Lanka, the PMD said.
The PMD added that as a result, based on the advice of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) implemented a new system under which curfew passes are to be issued in the future.
Thereby, curfew passes will be issued by the Police Headquarters, office of the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) for the respective Province, office of the Superintendent of Police (SP) for the relevant Police division and area Police stations under the new system.
The PMD said curfew passes for companies with 50 or more employees in the Colombo District will be issued by the Police Headquarters.
Curfew passes for companies with 50 or more employees in the Gampaha and Kalutara Districts will be issued by the office of the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in the Western Province.
Curfew passes for other districts will also be issued by the offices of the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) of the relevant Provinces.
Companies with 10 or more, and less than 50 employees, will be issued curfew passes by the offices of the Superintendent of Police under their relevant Police divisions.
Curfew passes for companies with less than 10 employees will be issued by the area Police stations, the PMD said.
Area Police stations have also been granted permission to issue curfew passes to individuals based on their personal needs.
The Acting IGP has also given instructions to companies that have been permitted to use the National Identity Cards (NIC) or Company IDs as curfew passes.
The PMD said the President’s Office, Prime Minister’ Office, certain Ministries, Departments, Associations, Boards and Authorities have been permitted to use their office IDs as curfew passes.
Legal action will be taken against those misusing their NICs or office IDs during the islandwide Police curfew, it added. (Colombo Gazette)
