Udayanga released on bail

Former Sri Lanka Ambassador to Russia Udayana Weeratunga was granted bail by the Fort Magistrate?s Court today.

The Court has granted time until 24 April to Weeratunga to fulfill his bail conditions.

Weeratunga was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at the Bandaranaike International Airport on 14 February.

He was detained after arriving in Sri Lanka from Muscat, Oman and was questioned by the CID.

Weeratunga was admitted to the prison hospital the day after his arrest, after reportedly complaining of a chest pain.

He was wanted on charges of embezzlement of public funds amounting to 7.833 million US Dollars in the MiG 27 aircraft deal. (Colombo Gazette)

Reunion alerted over boat coming from Sri Lanka

Reunion island has been alerted over a boat arriving from Sri Lanka with suspected migrants. According to media reports from Reunion island, the authorities in Sri Lanka have alerted Reunion saying a boat left Sri Lanka on July 12 and could be heading to Reunion. However the authorities say they have no trace of the boat as of yet so are unsure in which direction it was heading.

Death toll from extreme weather increases

The death toll from the extreme weather experienced in most parts of the country increase to nine today. The Disaster Management Centre said that 548 people have been affected by the weather so far. Among those killed are those swept away in flash floods, falling trees and landslides.
