Mangala alerts UNESCO on threat to Sinharaja

Former Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera has alerted the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on the threat posed to the Sinharaja Forest Reserve in Sri Lanka. In a letter to Ms. Audrey Azoulay, Director General of UNESCO, Samaraweera says the Sinharaja Forest Reserve in Sri Lanka which was recognised as a World Heritage Property by UNESCO, in 1988, is under threat. Fire on oil tanker completely extinguished

The fire on the oil tanker ‘MT New Diamond’ has been completely extinguished, the Sri Lanka Navy and the Indian Coast Guard said. The Indian Coast Guard said that there was no flame or smoke visible on the MT New Diamond. However, continuous boundary cooling was in progress with use of Aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) and water spraying. Fishermen warned as strong winds lash sea areas

Fishermen have been warned as strong winds continued to lash sea areas with wind speeds increasing upto 70 kmph. The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources warned small and one?day fishing vessels to stay away from fishing till 1200 hours tomorrow (Monday).
