Prisoners to be set free for Christmas

Several prisoners are to be set free for Christmas, the Prisons Department said today. According to the?Prisons Department, inmates serving time in jail for minor crimes will be set free. The Prisons Department also said that those above 70 years of age and who have been in prison for over 10 years will also be considered to be freed under a general amnesty. (Colombo Gazette)

Lankan maid in Saudi will not be executed

The Sri Lankan maid in Saudi Arabia who was on death row will not be executed but will be imprisoned, the Government said today. The Sri Lankan maid was to be stoned to death for committing adultery. The Foreign Employment Ministry and the Foreign Ministry were in touch with the relevant authorities in Saudi Arabia to seek clemency for the maid.
