President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has pledged to contribute to the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Corona Emergency Fund.
The Presidents’ Media Division said the President has pledged to contribute USD 5 million to the Fund.
The SAARC Corona Emergency Fund was proposed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
India made an initial offer of USD 10 million to help combat the fast-spreading COVID-19 pandemic in the region.
“President Rajapaksa has pledged USD 5m contribution to the SAARC Corona Emergency Fund. During the video conference among leaders of the SAARC region on March 15th, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi proposed the emergency fund with an initial offer of $10 million from India,” the President’s office said.
The Maldives,Nepal and Bhutan last week pledged a total of USD 1.3 million to the SAARC Corona Emergency Fund. (Colombo Gazette)
