Police identify 40 suspects who spread misinformation

The Police have identify 40 suspects who spread misinformation related to the coronavirus in Sri Lanka.

Police DIG Ajith Rohana said that steps are being taken to arrest the suspects.

DIG Ajith Rohana said that another two suspects have already been arrested in this connection.

He said that the Police will take stern action on anyone spreading misinformation with regards to the virus.

DIG Ajith Rohana said that apart from individuals, the Police will act on any institution which publishes false information with regards to the virus.

Meanwhile, the Defence Ministry said that legal action will be taken against those who spread misinformation via social media platforms and other digital media sites on the coronavirus to create panic among the public.

The Defence Ministry said that a five-year prison term will be given to those found guilty of? spreading or circulating misinformation via social media platforms under No.24 of the Computer Crimes Act of 2007. (Colombo Gazette)

No-confidence motion on Finance Minister defeated by 94 votes

The no-confidence motion on Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake was defeated in Parliament by 94 votes. In all, 145 members of Parliament voted against the motion while 51 members voted for it and 28 members were absent at the time the vote was taken. The joint opposition and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna voted for the motion. Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was among those absent during the vote. (Colombo Gazette)

Turkish Foreign Minister in Colombo for talks next week

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu is to visit Sri Lanka next week for talks with the Government, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said today.
