Mom put chili powder in child?s eye

A mother has been arrested for abusing her son and putting chili powder in his eyes, the police media unit said. The 22 year old mother was arrested by the Welawaya police after a complaint was received over the 119 police emergency hotline. According to the police, the mother, a resident of Welawaya, had abused her 4 year old son and even hurt his legs. She is to be produced in court later today. The child has been admitted to hospital for treatment. Further investigations are underway.

Another 93 asylum seekers arrested

The police and navy today arrested 93 people attempting to travel to Australia by boat illegally to seek asylum. According to the navy 68 people were arrested at sea in Kosgoda when they were heading to Australia by boat. The navy said that there were women and children among those arrested and the boat was now being escorted to the shore. Meanwhile the police arrested 25 people in Beruwala when they were making plans to head to Australia. The 25 people are to be produced in court.

Power cuts are back

The Power and Energy Ministry announced that power cuts will be imposed tomorrow (Thursday) in several towns including Colombo as a result of the breakdown at the Norochcholai coal power plant and insufficient rain at the catchment areas. A statement late this evening by the Power and Energy Ministry said that power cuts for 2 hours and 15 minutes will be imposed in 58 towns tomorrow during the day time. The power cuts have been scheduled for various times in each town, the Ministry said. The
