UNF to nominate Sajith as Opposition Leader

Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP) Sajith Premadasa is to be nominated as the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.

Leader of the Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) and member of the United National Front, MP Mano Ganesan, in a Tweet said that this decision was taken as a result of the understanding reached by the UNF leaders and subsequent discussions between Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and Premadasa.

“UNP Dep Leader SajithP would be nominated to the post of Opp Leader in the parliament of Sri Lanka as per understanding arrived between UNF leaders and UNP leader RanilW and later at the discussion held between Speaker KaruJ, UNP leader RanilW and UNP deputy Leader SajithP,” MP Ganesan said in a Tweet.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya had this week reversed a decision to name United National Front leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as the leader of the opposition after 57 Parliamentarians requested that United National Front Parliamentarian Sajith Premadasa be appointed as the leader of the opposition.

In a statement yesterday the Speaker had said that he had notified the Secretary of the UNP about the letter he received last evening, signed by 57 MPs requesting the recognition of MP Sajith Premadasa as the Opposition Leader.

The Speaker had said that the difference of opinion must be settled through dialogue and communicated to the Speaker duly. (Colombo Gazette)
