New State Minister of Defence assumes duties

The newly appointed State Minister of Defence, Chamal Rajapaksa assumed duties at the Ministry of Defence today.

Upon arriving at the Ministry the Minister was received by the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Major General (Rtd) Kamal Gunaratne, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), tri-forces commanders, Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Director General of Civil Defence Force and senior Ministry officials.

State Minister of Irrigation and Rural Development Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene, Heads of institutions under the purview of the MoD, Officials and staff of the Ministry were also present at the occasion.

Chamal Rajapaksa is also the Minister of Mahaweli, Agriculture, Irrigation and Rural Development, and also the Minister of Internal Trade, Food Security and Consumer Welfare.

Police open fire on car in Veyangoda, suspect arrested

The Police opened fire on a car in Veyangoda and arrested a suspect, the Police media unit said. The Police gave chase to the suspect who fled in the car and opened fire near the Veyangoda flyover. One person was injured in the shooting incident.
