UNP accuses Government of taking revenge on CID

The United National Party (UNP) today accused the Government of taking revenge on the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

UNP Parliamentarian and former Law and Order Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara said that the CID is being targeted for investigating some members of the current Government.

He said that the CID has been placed in jeopardy by exposing the names of the officers involved in investigations.

The former Minister said that the Government should not have allowed a name list of the CID to be sent to the Airport to prevent them from travelling overseas.

Ranjith Madduma Bandara said that if there is a concern about any CID officer a fair investigation should be carried out and action taken based on the investigation.

He said that the Government is pushing the country back to the dark days experienced prior to 2015.

Over 700 officers of the CID have been placed on a watch list at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA).

Police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera said this week that the list had been sent to the BIA informing the Immigration and Emigration Department to alert the Police if anyone on the list attempts to travel overseas.

The move comes after CID Inspector of Police (IP) Nishantha Silva fled the country.

EU assures Sri Lanka will continue to have GSP Plus till 2023

CCD records statement from Judge Gihan Pilapitiya

The Colombo Crime Division (CCD) recorded a statement from Colombo High Court Judge Gihan Pilapitiya over the leaked telephone recordings involving Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake.
