UN official on drugs and crime holds talks with Defence Secretary

A United Nations official on drugs and crime held talks with Defence Secretary Kamal Gunaratne today.

A four-member delegation of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) led by the Director Operations, Ms. Miwa Kato met the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Major General (Rtd) Kamal Gunaratne at the Ministry today.

The Defence Ministry said that the delegation had discussions with the Secretary on a number of matters including training and strengthening cooperation.

UNODC is a department of the UN Secretariat assisting Member States fighting transnational organized crime, corruption and terrorism, providing assistance to counter crimes such as illicit drug trafficking, human trafficking, smuggling of migrants, and violence against women and cybercrime, and creating capacity for criminal justice and crime prevention. Lankan officers leave Tamil Nadu

Bowing to pressures from Pro-Eelam Tamil outfits and the Tamil Nadu Government over their training at the Defence Service Staff College in Wellington, two Sri Lankan Military personnel left Tamil Nadu this evening, the Press Trust of India reported. Wing Commander M S Bandara Dassanayek and Major C S Harischandra Hettiarachchige were undergoing training in the College from May 27 despite objection from the State Government and protests from almost all the political parties and Pro-Eelam Outfits.

Army turns down Indian offer

The army says it had turned down an offer by India to train two Sri Lankan officers at another location as opposed to the Defence Services Staff Course (DSSC) in Wellington, Tamil Nadu.
