President hails social media role in his polls win

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa hailed the role played by social media in his Presidential election victory.

Social media was used to both promote Rajapaksa and often discredit his opponents during the campaign.

“I wish to convey my heartfelt gratitude to all the social media activists who supported directly and indirectly, with great commitment towards the victory of our nation and request your continued and active participation in building a prosperous country,” Rajapaksa said in a message today.

Local and foreign election observers had raised concerns over the misinformation that was spread on social media during the campaign period.

Facebook came under criticism over its failure to immediately take down posts which targeted some minority communities in an attempt to gather more Sinhalese majority votes for Rajapaksa. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. I am pleased with the President’s response towards the people who contributed for the betterment of Sri Lanka. Personally, I am thrilled with the President’s humble approach. I wish Prabhakaran had this humble characteristic, it would have saved many people’s agony, particularly his life.

  2. Editor

Two articles that need to be “aired” in Sri Lanka: (1) British SAS and Government cover up war crimes in Afghanistan. (2) Chinese government attempted to plant spy in Australian Federal Government.

Both articles available on web. Show these hypocrites for what they are.

  3. Yes President social media was spreading misinformation, lies, baseless allegations etc etc against your opponent Sajit , now election is over now it is your turn to perform and develop our country fulfill the promises given in your manifesto please don’t give excuses already we can see its happening people voted for you with lot of expectations so lets be united and move forward.

  4. The Tamil social media and digital internet publications and youtube tamil channels, many operating from Indian soil were used “consistently & persistantly” by the Muslim politicians, Muslim ministers and so-called muslim civil society leaders in their support to try and make Sajith Premadasa the next president of Sri Lanka. Editors of Digital and internet media operating in Sri Lanka even violated the “ETHICS” & “CODE OF CONDUCT” of digital internet media in rejecting the “CONTENT” presented by the Pro-Gotabaya campaign. Many thanks to the very few Tamil social media and digital internet publications that accommodated and allowed publications of our groups. Former Muslim ministers had spent millions of rupees (including their ministry allocation funding) to carry out this Tamil media campaign. The “NEGATIVE” bombardment was so heavy that the one or two Muslim groups who were supporting HE. Gotabaya Rajapaksa had the most difficult task in holding them at bay. Yet they managed to pass the message of HE. Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s election platform and spread the messages assured in the manifest which was followed by a substantial percentage of the Tamil and Muslim vote banks, even challenging the force of the Muslim politicians and Muslim ministers “campaign onslaughter”. While praising the appreciation of the work done by social media and digital media writers, commentators and opinion contributors, expressed by HE. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, we kindly request HE. Gotabaya Rajapaksa enhance the ability of the Tamil Speaking social media and digital internet activists to challenge the “NEGATIVE” campaign the opposition groups, especially that of the”NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT”, the political campaign arm of the DNF run by Chathura Seneratne and Rajitha Seneratne may start to pour out to the Tamil speaking voters of Sri Lanka, well ahead of the general election in April/May 2020. It is most humbly requested that HE. Gotabaya Rajapaksa should summon a meeting of all “free lance writers, youtube channel activists, political commentators who had supported HE. Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s campaign for a meeting and lay out the SLPP/New Governments 2020 general election campaign, to enable this section of the media to effectively support the campaign in 2020.
