The Police have been instructed to take action against anyone disrupting the peace, Defence Secretary Major General (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne said today.
In a special statement, the new Defence Secretary urged the public to go about their day-to-day life without fearing violence.
He said that there have been fears that following the Presidential election there would be widespread violence.
“There should not be any undue fear among the people of the country of any political revenge, abduction or disturbances can be caused by the political changes that have taken place in the country following the recent Presidential Election,” the Defence Secretary said.
Gunaratne said that such fears are unwarranted and he has instructed the Police to be vigilant and act against anyone disrupting the peace.
“Senior DIGs, SSPs, ASPs, SPs and OICs Police Stations of respective areas have been advised through Acting Inspector General of Police to be more vigilant regarding the security of the country and that they are responsible for the security of their respective areas,” he said.
The Defence Secretary said that steps have been taken to ensure all Sri Lankans can live in peace no matter their race, religion or political affiliations.
