The appointment of a caretaker cabinet or holding early Parliamentary elections are among the proposals made by the Government and opposition after Gotabaya Rajapaksa took oaths as the new President of Sri Lanka, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said.
The Speaker’s Office said that following the 16 November election, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa and other party leaders had talks with peaker Karu Jayasuriya.
At the discussions it was proposed to either hold Parliamentary elections in March 2020 as per the Constitution or obtain majority approval in Parliament to dissolve Parliament and hold early Parliamentary elections or appoint a caretaker cabinet till the election next year.
The Speaker’s office said that Speaker Karu Jayasuriya hopes to have talks with party leaders this week to reach a final decision.
Several Ministers in the cabinet have already resigned to make way for a new cabinet to be appointed.
