Voting is underway to elect Sri Lanka’s new President with the main contenders being New Democratic Front (NDF) Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa and Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Tight Police security has been placed at most of the polling centres during the election.
Voting opened at 7am today and closes at 5pm this evening.
Nearly 16 million voters will be able to cast their votes at 12,845 polling stations throughout the country.
A record 35 candidates are vying for the top post at today’s election, which will go down in history as the presidential election with the largest number of candidates.
This election will make record as the election with the largest number of polling stations and the longest ballot paper.
Around 400,000 election officials have been placed on duty and over 60,000 police personnel and over 8,000 Civil Defence Force (CDF) personnel deployed to maintain law and order. (Colombo Gazette)
