Defence Secretary instructed to act on officers in high profile cases

Attorney General (AG) Dappula de Livera has informed Defence Secretary General (Retired) Shantha Kottegoda to take appropriate action against officers facing accusations in high profile criminal cases.

Kottegoda and the Navy Commander have been instructed to take action on Navy personnel accused over the abduction and murder of 11 youth.

Meanwhile, the Defence Secretary and the Army Commander have been instructed to take action against the accused in the disappearance of cartoonist Prageeth Eknaligoda and over the attack on protesters in Rathupaswala.

Navy officers had been accused over the abduction and disappearance of 11 youth in Colombo and the suburbs between 2008-2009.

Eknaligoda was believed to have been abducted by Army intelligence officers in January 2010 and held at an Army camp. His exact whereabouts are not yet known.

In September the Attorney General filed indictments at the Gampaha High Court against Brigadier Anura Deshapriya Gunawardena and three Army soldiers regarding the Rathupaswala shooting.

Ninety-four indictments were filed against them for shooting dead three protesters and causing injury to the protesters during a demonstration at Rathupaswala, Weliweriya in August of 2013 where people were demanding clean drinking water.

Court informs CID it can arrest Diana Gamage

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) was informed by the Colombo Chief Magistrate that it can arrest State Minister Diana Gamage if there is evidence that she had violated the Immigration and Emigration Act.?
