Anura condemns decision to free Royal Park murder convict

National People’s Power Presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake today condemned the decision by President Maithripala Sirisena to free Royal Park murder convict Jude Shramantha Anthony Jayamaha.

Condemning the move, Dissanayake said that it was illegal and not justifiable.

He said that the court had given the death sentence after giving careful consideration to the facts.

Dissanayake said that releasing the convict on a Presidential pardon disregards the independence of the judiciary.

He urged the President to reconsider the move and also requested the Attorney General and BAR Association to intervene in the matter.

Royal Park murder convict Jude Shramantha Anthony Jayamaha was given a Presidential pardon on Saturday.

The Prison?s Department said that he had been released after being granted the pardon.

The sister of Royal Park murder victim Yvonne Johnson yesterday demanded answers from President Maithripala Sirisena after the President pardoned the convict over the crime committed in 2005.

Yvonne Johnson?s sister Caroline Jonsson-Bradley, in a Facebook post yesterday, demanded to know why the President showed interest in the case.
