Sri Lanka awaits outcome of UK polls

Sri Lanka is awaiting the outcome of the elections in the UK which will decide the future of Brexit.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told the Colombo Gazette that Sri Lanka is interested in the outcome of the election and the future of Brexit.

“The UK has announced elections in December so we will need to wait and see what happens,” the Prime Minister said.

Britain is gearing up for a December general?election?in a showdown over Brexit.

The European Union (EU) has meanwhile agreed to extend the Brexit deadline until 31 January 2020.

Brexit was originally due to happen on 29 March 2019. That was two years after then Prime Minister Theresa May triggered Article 50 – the formal process to leave – and kicked off negotiations.

Under Mrs May, the deadline was delayed twice after MPs rejected her Brexit deal – eventually pushing it to 31 October.

Despite negotiating a revised deal, Prime Minister Boris Johnson will miss the latest deadline. That’s because the EU has agreed to a further extension until 31 January.

The latest extension came after MPs failed to pass the new Brexit deal into law. (Colombo Gazette)

Quarantine curfew declared in parts of Colombo

A quarantine curfew has been declared in parts of Colombo with immediate effect. The curfew has been declared in the Mattakkuliya, Modara, Wellampitiya, Bloemendhal and Grandpass areas with immediate effect.
