FR filed against multiple agreements with America

A Fundamental Rights (FR) petition was filed at the Supreme Court today against multiple agreements Sri Lanka hopes to sign with the United States.

The FR petition is seeking an interim order against the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agreement as well as the Acquisition and Cross Servicing Agreement (ACSA) and Status Of Forces Agreement (SOFA) agreements.

Attorney-at-Law Darshana Weraduwage filed the FR petition with President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Foreign Affairs Minister Tilak Marapana, Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera and the Attorney General named as respondents.

The petitioner has requested the court to issue an order declaring that the decision taken by the Government of Sri Lanka to sign the agreements are in violation of the Constitution.
