The United National Party (UNP) fears sabotage prevented the helicopter carrying New Democratic Front Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa from landing in Kurunegala this evening to attend an election rally.
Speaking at the Kurunegala rally State Minister Ashoka Abeysinghe said that the helicopter made several attempts to land at the designated spot but could not as it was too dark.
As a result the rally eventually concluded without the participation of Sajith Premadasa.
Speaking to the Colombo Gazette, Deputy Minister Ajith P. Perera said that the electricity was cut off in the area just before the helicopter could land.
He claimed that the Kurunegala Municipality had cut off the electricity at the spot the helicopter was to land placing Premadasa’s life in danger.
Perera said that the helicopter was eventually diverted forcing Premadasa to skip the Kurunegala rally. (Colombo Gazette)
