New Democratic Front Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa says he will support implementing the death penalty for convicted drug smugglers and terrorists.
He says his main opponent at the 16 November Presidential election does not support the death penalty.
However, he says his stand is to implement the death penalty for convicted drug smugglers and terrorists.
Premadasa expressed these views at an election rally in Akmeemana today.
His stand contradicts the position taken earlier by Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera who has opposed the death penalty.
Premadasa said that his position is that if a terrorist is convicted he must be sentenced to death as opposed to sending him to prison and allowing him to promote terrorism.
He said that he and his nominee for Defence Minister, Sarath Fonseka, will get rid of drug smugglers and terrorists in the country. (Colombo Gazette)
