State Minister Vasantha Senanayake has threatened to withdraw support to United National Front Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa.
In a letter to Premadasa the State Minister said that his support will depend on clarity over the future roles to be given to United National Front leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and some members of the United National Front.
Senanayake said that there is a doubt growing among voters with regards to Premadasa’s campaign.
He said that after the next Presidential election the President will not have executive powers and instead those powers will be in the hands of the next Prime Minister.
The State Minister fears that Wickremesinghe will be Prime Minister if Premadasa is elected President and that will go against past struggles in the party for a new leader for the country.
Senanayake, who during the political crisis last year switched sides, says those who were against Premadasa being nominated as the Presidential candidate, are now at the forefront of his campaign.
The State Minister has said that his support for Premadasa will depend on the future role to be given to Wickremesinghe as well as Ministers Ravi Karunanayake and a few others. (Colombo Gazette)
