Gold worth Rs 40 million confiscated at BIA

A Duty Free officer at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) has been arrested while trying to smuggle out gold worth Rs 40 million.

According to Customs Spokesman Sunil Jayaratne, Customs officers attached to the Narcotics Control unit of the BIA had detected 40 gold biscuits and one kilo of gold jewelry hidden on the person of the Duty Free officer.

The detection was made upon intelligence  received by Customs officials.

Further investigations are being conducted by the Customs Department.

  1. Several airport staff have been arrested recently as a result of good detective work. Pretty obvious this is only the tip of the iceberg. The question is who else is connected with the smuggling as s single individual cannot find the money to buy these, plan and carry out the operation. The other question is as to what the punishment is. In none of the arrests, we never hear the outcome, punishment and the fate of the confiscated gold.
