National People’s Movement (NPM) Presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake will not support calls to withdraw the military from the North.
Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath said that the military is tasked with ensuring national security.
He said that the military maintains camps in all parts of the country and not just the North.
As a result, he say the NPM will not support calls to withdraw the military from the North.
Vijitha Herath also said that the NMP is against moves to merge the North and East.
He said that calls to merge the North and East has an extremist motive behind it and the NPM will oppose it.
Herath also said that the national issue must not be used as an election tool.
He said that the national issue is a very sensitive issue and the NPM is not prepared to make commitments related to the national issue just to win votes.
Herath said that the focus of the NPM is to ensure national unity. (Colombo Gazette)
