Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has called on Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) members to act with wisdom at the upcoming Presidential election.
In a statement issued today, Kumaratunga said that the SLFP had disregarded the views of a majority members and decided to sign an agreement last week which will destroy the party.
She noted that historically the SLFP has not been a party which works with murderers or fraudsters.
Kumaratunga said that no SLFP member is prepared to push the country back to a period where there is lawlessness, extremism and communalism.
The SLFP had last week signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).
The agreement was signed after the SLFP decided not to put forward its own candidate at the Presidential election.
Kumaratunga said that for the first time in history the SLFP will not be contesting a Presidential election. (Colombo Gazette)
