Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) General Secretary (SLFP) Dayasiri Jayasekera says the coalition with the United National Party (UNP) ruined the SLFP.
In a letter to former President Chandrika Kumaratunga the SLFP General Secretary said that in light of the policy framework and the founding principles of the party the SLFP is not in a position to support the UNP at the upcoming Presidential election.
He says the policies and framework of the UNP are contrary to the party policies of the SLFP.
“We cannot support a party that promotes the views and policies that are based on neoliberalism. In order to add the present downfall of the SLFP was due to a coalition arrangement with the UNP. As a result, today our party, which was once the number one force in the country has downgraded to the third in a span of 5 years,” he said.
Jayasekera says the prerequisite for the SLFP to support Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapakse at the election next month was based on policy and value compatibility.
Kumaratunga had earlier sent a message to Jayasekera criticizing the decision by the SLFP to back Gotabaya Rajapakse. (Colombo Gazette)
