President Maithripala Sirisena has decided to remain neutral at the 2019 Presidential election.
Sri Lanka Freedom Party General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekera said that the President will not take the stage and support any candidate at the election.
Jayasekera said that the President will take a back seat till 18 November.
“He is the President and Minister in charge of the Police and security forces. So for the first time in history the President will, to an extent put his political party aside and be independent to ensure a free and fair election,” Jayasekera said.
He said the President took the decision at a meeting held last night.
The SLFP had appointed Prof. Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa as the acting chairman of the SLFP. (Colombo Gazette)
